Zhong Shangjun, a resident from Dongtanghu Community, Dongtanghu Town of Ningxiang city, was so happy because he learned that the sewage treatment system of the nearby Donghutang Middle School had been officially put into use.
Rural domestic sewage treatment is a major event directly linked to the people’s livelihood. For water improvement, Ningxiang River Chiefs Office conducted a comprehensive investigation on the domestic sewage of densely populated areas such as towns, rural schools, and catering industry in June this year. Relevant units are required to make changes for the problems found.

Donghutang Middle School is a public school with the largest number of students in Donghutang town. The surrounding people were miserable because of the imperfect infrastructure, the disrepair of sewage pipes and the infiltration of sewage. “In summer, there are many mosquitoes around here, and the smell is very bad. Moreover, the sewage affected the well water, and there are many insects in the well, so we dare not use it.” said Zhong Shangjun.
In July this year, the town launched the sewage treatment projects of seven schools, such as Dongtanghu Middle School, Shuangquan Primary School, and Donghutang Central Kindergarten. This aimed to solve the existing problems of open channel discharge of canteen wastewater and direct discharge of toilet wastewater, and improve the environment of schools and their surroundings.

“We speeded up the construction in the summer vacation, and now the sewage treatment systems of seven schools have been put into use,” an official of the local government said.
