Hunan sees upsurge in invention patent filings in H1

In the first half of 2022, the intellectual property sector of Hunan has achieved progress, with improvement in both quality and quantity of patent filings.

There were  48,685 patent applications filed in the whole province, a year-on-year increase of 10.76 percent, among which there were 10,444 invention patent filings, up 31.13 percent.

According to statistics from Hunan Provincial Intellectual Property Administration, as of the first half of this year, there have been 79,032 invention patent filings, a year-on-year increase of 25.72 percent, with 11.93 invention patents per 10,000 people, a year-on-year increase of 26.11 percent.

In the first half of this year, the number of registered trademarks has reached 96,225 among 103,935 registration applications. As of the first half of this year, there have been 989,826 valid registered trademarks in Hunan province, up 24.01 percent year on year.

In the first half of the year, the number of service invention patents and non-service invention patents filed accounted for 79.6 percent and 20.4 percent of the total respectively.

The service invention patents included 30,740 items from industrial and mining enterprises, 7,029 from universities and colleges, 574 from agencies and organizations and 410 from scientific and research institutions.

Enterprises have been more aware of innovation. In the first half of the year, the number of enterprises with patent filings in Hunan province increased by 1,214  to 7,681 over the same period of last year.

Universities and colleges are an important part of the innovation system of Hunan province and a significant source of the scientific and technological achievements. In the first half of this year, another 15 colleges and universities had patent filings, with the total number reaching 128. The top three universities in invention patents were Central South University, National University of Defense Technology and Hunan University.

In terms of regional distribution, Changsha, Zhuzhou, Hengyang and Xiangtan ranked among the top in the number of patent filings. As of the first half of this year, the valid invention patents of Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan have amounted to 62,776 with 37.30 patents found in per 10,000 people, accounting for 79.43 percent of those in the whole province.
