Li Guocheng was enrolled in Ningxiang Vocational Secondary School in 2019 with the e-commerce major. He was honored as “the most beautiful secondary vocational student” in Changsha in 2020, and won the first place in the fifth China Vocational Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2021.

Li Guocheng was born in Yutan Subdistrict, Ningxiang City in 2002. At the age of six, Li Guocheng’s parents divorced and he lived a hard life with his father. At the age of 13, Li Guocheng was diagnosed with a malignant tumor, osteosarcoma after sudden stabbing pain hit his legs. When he was 15, he had his leg amputated and was fitted with a prosthetic leg because the tumor had progressed. From then on, Li Guocheng had to walk with crutches and had difficulty in moving.

In 2019, 17-year-old Li Guocheng entered Ningxiang Vocational Secondary School.

Carrying a backpack and a crutch, he caught the attention of teachers and classmates on the first day of school. While the teachers still thought about how to give the one-legged teenager more help, Li Guocheng has already managed his life well. He not only quickly adapted to the boarding life of school, but also successfully ran for monitor, joined the radio station, and participated in the school community activities.

He is not only a regular basketball player in the afternoon, a singer at the track in his spare time, an invention enthusiast during entrepreneurship and innovation career, but also “the most beautiful secondary vocational student” and a “triple-A” outstanding student in Changsha. He inspires people around him with his self-reliance and positive attitude.

“Li Guocheng is very self-independent. He will never bother his classmates or teachers if he can handle things by himself,” said Fu Xi, head teacher of Li Guocheng.

“Those children make this winter much warmer.” Disabled people in nursing homes still remember the students who brought them foot warmers.

In the winter of 2021, Li Guocheng won the first prize in the fifth China Vocational Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with his project that a foot warmer was specially designed for the disabled. For the R&D, Li Guocheng and his team members spent all their spare time improving the product in the school’s computer room from May to December and did product survey with teachers during holidays.

In order to know more about the life demands of the disabled, make higher-quality products and bring users more comfortable experience, they visited 21 towns and villages in Hunan, covering a distance of more than 5,000 kilometers.

The foot warmer now has obtained the certificate of utility model patent and has been used at many disabled care centers and nursing homes. During the R&D period, the team also set up a public welfare project with the theme of home appliances to assist the disabled elderly, designed an IP “Xiaohuang” and launched five service models including product R&D, product matching, science publicity and education, door-to-door service and volunteer team.

In the preparation before the finals, Li Guocheng had to overcome the difficulties brought by physical discomfort and sacrificed his time for the college entrance examination. He rehearsed day and night with his team, and often stood for hours at a time with the artificial limb. He has never uttered a word of complaint but encouraged others to persevere even when his leg began swelling and turned red.

“In this team, everyone looks up to Li as a role model, and the name of the project becomes more meaningful because of him,” said Zhu Junying, the teacher who led the team.

After the competition, his school life returned to normal. Li Guocheng is still a versatile student busy with kinds of activities and a good partner excellent in character and learning. He has won many awards in various school activities and achieved excellent results in municipal competitions on behalf of the school.

Now he is in hospital again because the disease deteriorates. Lying in bed he is still optimistic and cheerful, looking forward to the future university life. He said that maybe he can’t decide how long he can live, but in the limited time of life, he would make full use of every second of life. The shining moments will prove that he lives a worthy life.
