Smart farmland management increases farmers’ income

In the paddy fields of Shuangjiangkou Town, Ningxiang City, Hunan Province, Xiang Jingsong, a large grain farmer, is controlling the drones to spray Chinese milk vetches. He said that the Chinese milk vetches will be good fertilizers when planting early season rice next year.

As a drone operator, Xiang Jingsong can earn more than 50,000 yuan a year. Together with the income from 26.67 hectares of rice he planted this year, he can get a net income of nearly 200,000 yuan. Xiang had planted more than 40 hectares of rice, but he lost money because of poor management.

In 2019, the town introduced a smart agricultural technology company. Apart from transferring more than 333 hectares of paddy fields, the company also provides other large grain farmers with one-stop agricultural technical services. And standardized management is available in the whole planting process.

In the company’s office, an operator opens the “Smart Agricultural Management Platform” and points to one of the agricultural machines in operation. Paddy field area, operation time, oil consumption and other data are shown clearly on the screen. The head of the company said that the company’s 35 devices are equipped with Beidou system, with clear operation tracks and work efficiency.

Efficient and standard agricultural technical services help large grain farmers relieve their worries and enable the company to develop rapidly. “Like spraying, a worker can spray 6,667-odd square meters a day, but a drone can spray over 200,000 square meters. Now, we provide technical services for nearly 133 million square meters, and 70% of the company’s income comes from technical services,” said an official of the company.

The technical services gave Xiang Jingsong great confidence. In 2019, he contracted more than 200,000 square meters of paddy fields. He also got the drone operation certificate after participating in the company’s training.
“Though I’ve been engaged in farming for more than 20 years, I’m still impressed and convinced by these high-technology devices. Next year, I plan to contract another 66,667 square meters of paddy fields,” said Xiang.
