Hunan province started to celebrate the 4th Chinese Farmers’ Harvest in Changsha on September 22, 2021.

As a powerhouse in agriculture and representative province in middle reach of the Yangtze River, Hunan is a main venue of the national celebrations for the Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival this year. With the theme of “Celebrating Harvest, Extending Gratitude to CPC”, two important events—the Rice-farming Culture and Food Security Forum and the National Farmers’ Cultural and Art Exhibition and Performance—will be held in Hunan.

“Hunan is a major origin of Chinese rice farming culture. It has the largest rice acreage in China, which provides a strong support for the food security of the country,” Li Jinxiang, national chief veterinary officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, highly praised Hunan’s agricultural achievements when he addressed the Rice-farming Culture and Food Security Forum held on that afternoon. He exchanged views with experts and scholars on the history and cultural connotations of rice-farming civilization in the Yangtze River basin, and explored the significance of the cultivation for food security.

The National Farmers’ Cultural and Art Exhibition and Performance was held in Changsha county on September 23. The event had four parts—launching ceremony, theatre performance, intangible cultural heritage experience and bazaar exhibition. Several provinces and municipalities participated. Local intangible cultural heritage projects, and folk arts and crafts were shown via exhibition and interactive activities.

Celebration events will also be held in Yongzhou’s Daoxian county and Changde’s Lixian county. Beyond that, there will be 12 main events and 10 featured activities across the province, including a rural revitalization-themed photo blogger competition, a “new farmer” agricultural machinery operation skill competition and quality paddy auction.
