The long list of the selection and promotion activity "100 Archaeological Discoveries in 100 Years" was announced recently, and 160 archaeological discoveries across China were shortlisted. Eight of the top 10 archaeological discoveries in Hunan province were included in the list, one of which was Tanheli Site.

This year marks the centenary of Chinese archaeology and the 70th anniversary of Hunan archaeology. In the one hundred years, Hunan archaeology has played an important role and made remarkable achievements.

In May, 2021, the selection and promotion activity "100 Archaeological Discoveries in 100 Years" was launched. On June 11, the promotion activity for the top ten archaeological discoveries and one hundred unearthed cultural relics in Hunan province kicked off in Changsha, attracting extensive attention from insiders and the public.

Within 18 days, the top 10 archaeological discoveries received more than 2 million votes on the platform of Hunan Daily, and the result was announced on July 11 after expert evaluation and online voting. The listed archaeological discoveries were recommended to participate in the selection of "100 Archaeological Discoveries in 100 Years". At present, this activity has entered the final evaluation stage.

Tanheli Site, located in the west of Huangcai Basin on the upper reaches of Weishui River, dates back 3,000 years ago and covers an area of 23,000 square meters. More than 200 precious cultural relics, such as "Four-ram Zun Vessel" and "Bronze Ding (food container) with Human-face Design", as well as a large number of pottery, bronze ware and jade ware, have been excavated in the site, proving the existence of "Tanheli Culture".

It is identified as “Bronze Cultural Center in Southern China” and has gained many titles—"National Top 10 Archaeological Discoveries", "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units" and "National Major Sites". The site has also been listed in the major site protection projects during the "12th Five-Year Plan" and the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, and included as a key cultural heritage project co-constructed by Hunan province and ministries.
