Experience Western Zhou culture in Tanheli National Archaeological Site Park

Tanheli Site, located in Huangcai town of Ningxiang city in Hunan province, is an important Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771BC) site in the Xiangjiang river basin which could date back to approximately 3,000 years ago. Hailed as the bronze culture center in southern China, it consists of palace sites, city wall sites, moat sites, civilian sites and noble graves, with a total area of 23,000 square meters.

The several archaeological excavations of the site carried out by the Hunan Institute of Archaeology with the support of the National Cultural Heritage Administration from 2001 to 2005 unearthed numerous potteries, jade wares and bronze wares. Tanheli Site was confirmed as the capital of a certain state during the Western Zhou Dynasty, and a breakthrough was made in the interpretation of Ningxiang copper wares represented by the Four-ram Zun Vessel. As a representative and typical historical and cultural heritage in southern China, the site is of great importance in the history of development of Hunan and Chinese civilization.
 
With a total investment of 1 billion yuan, the Tanheli National Archaeological Site Park consists of the exhibition hall of the site, the Tanheli Bronze Culture Museum, and the ancient civilization experience area. Its planned area is 1,198 mu (798,671 square meters) within the scope of the site, and the first-stage project includes the Tanheli Bronze Culture Museum and the restoration of the city walls.
 
The bronze culture museum is built with the Four-ram Zun Vessel as the prototype and resembles a quadripod. The museum's front door is carved in a quadripod shape with human face design. With a total floor area of 4,000 sq m, the museum has three layers (one layer is underground), exhibiting 1,500 bronze wares excavated from Ningxiang.
 
To play the role of culture in serving society and promoting development, Ningxiang adheres to the strategic position of a Western Zhou culture and bronze culture display zone, a national demonstration zone for site conservation and utilization, and an economic growth pole featuring of cultural and tourism in western Changsha. Ningxiang create the Tanheli National Archaeological Site Park themed by protection and utilization.
